Why do you get cravings during pregnancy?
The exact reasons aren’t fully known, but several factors are believed to play a role:
- Hormonal changes affect taste and smell.
- Morning sickness may make you seek foods that ease nausea, such as sour or salty snacks.
- Blood sugar swings can trigger a desire for quick carbs.
- Nutrient needs – sometimes your body signals it’s lacking something, like iron or calcium.
Common cravings – and what they might mean
- Sweet foods (chocolate, fruit, sweets): often linked to blood sugar fluctuations.
- Sour or salty (pickles, lemon, crisps): may soothe nausea.
- Ice cubes: sometimes connected to iron deficiency.
- Unusual cravings (soil, clay, soap): called pica and should always be discussed with your midwife or doctor.
How to manage cravings
Cravings are usually harmless, but balance is key:
- Listen to your body – but in moderation. Enjoy what you fancy, but try to add healthier options.
- Smart snacks. Keep fruit, nuts, smoothies, or yoghurt handy when cravings strike.
- Stabilise your blood sugar. Regular meals with slow-release carbs help reduce intense cravings.
- Stay hydrated. Thirst is sometimes mistaken for hunger.
When to seek help
Most cravings are normal, but contact your midwife if you:
- Crave non-food items (e.g. soil, soap, clay).
- Experience cravings so strong that they affect your health or wellbeing.
