Talk about feelings and expectations
As a partner, you have just as much right to feel anxious and ask questions as the person who is pregnant. Be open about your thoughts regarding the birth, parenthood, and the first weeks at home. Remember, the midwife is also there for you and can answer your questions.
Prepare for the birth
The day of birth is often full of anticipation and nerves. The more prepared you are, the calmer the experience will be for both you and your partner.
- Read about the different stages of labour.
- Talk with your partner about her fears and needs.
- Discuss how you can support her if the pain becomes intense.
- Be ready to make practical decisions, such as requesting a different midwife if necessary.
Pack smart – for yourself too
Don’t forget that you also need energy during labour. Pack snacks, water, and something to eat to help you stay strong and supportive throughout the process.
Take care of yourself
Your everyday life changes as a partner when expecting a child.
- Talk to others about your feelings about becoming a parent.
- Don’t worry if you gain a few kilos – this is common and usually disappears afterwards.
- Be prepared to take a step back and be extra patient at times.
When moods fluctuate
Hormonal changes can affect your partner’s mood. It can feel challenging sometimes, but have patience – it will pass. Your support is important even when you feel tired or unsure.
