Dangerous or not – myth or fact?

Yes, you can absolutely bathe, in a bathtub, pool or outdoors. It’s a great way to relax and combine pleasure with well-being!

Bathing during pregnancy can be wonderful it’s a simple (and inexpensive) way to relax and feel weightless for a while. Swimming outdoors in summer can provide refreshing relief, and a warm bath during winter can be incredibly soothing. There’s no reason to avoid swimming in the sea, lakes, pools or bathtubs just because you’re pregnant. The only time you should definitely avoid bathing is at the very end of your pregnancy if your waters have broken, then there’s a risk of infection.

What about hot tubs and warm baths during pregnancy?

Hot tubs were previously discouraged throughout pregnancy due to the risk of bacteria in the warm water. During pregnancy, you’re also more prone to thrush and urinary tract infections. Some studies suggest very hot baths might be risky in the first 12 weeks, as high temperatures could potentially affect the foetus. But there are no official guidelines. Nowadays, the decision is up to you. If you’re worried about bacteria, it can help to urinate after bathing. If you’re congested, bathing in salt water can act like a natural nasal spray.

Swimming, saunas and other things to keep in mind

Swimming is an excellent way to stay active during pregnancy, it’s low-impact and enjoyable. Saunas can also be pleasant and are not considered dangerous during pregnancy. In fact, your body can regulate heat better in a sauna than in a hot bath, since you sweat. If it gets too warm, simply step out. Trust your instincts and use common sense, you know what feels right for you and your baby. If you’re still unsure, talk to your midwife.
