Dangerous or not – myth or fact?
Absolutely, you can bathe – in the tub, pool, or outside. It’s a great way to relax and enjoy yourself at the same time!
Taking a bath while pregnant can be incredibly soothing. It’s a simple (and affordable) way to relax and feel weightless for a bit. Swimming outdoors in the summer can cool you off, and warm baths during the winter can be deeply calming. There’s no reason to avoid the ocean, lakes, pools, or bathtubs just because you’re pregnant. The only time you should definitely avoid bathing is at the very end of pregnancy if your water has broken, there’s a risk of infection.
What about hot tubs and warm baths during pregnancy?
Hot tubs were once discouraged during pregnancy due to the risk of bacteria in the warm water. You're also more prone to yeast and urinary tract infections when pregnant. Some studies suggest very hot baths may not be safe in the first 12 weeks, as the heat could potentially affect the baby but there are no strict guidelines. Today, it’s your choice. If you’re worried about bacteria, urinating after bathing can help. If you’re stuffy, a saltwater bath can work like a natural nasal spray.
Swimming, saunas, and more tips to consider
Swimming is a great pregnancy workout, it’s gentle and effective. Saunas can also be relaxing and aren’t considered harmful during pregnancy. In fact, it’s easier for your body to regulate heat in a sauna than in a bath because you sweat. If it feels too hot, just step out. Trust your instincts and use common sense, you know what works for you and your baby. Still unsure? Talk to your healthcare provider or midwife.
