Tenderness and Sensitivity
It’s common for breasts and nipples to feel tender. Some women find touch painful, while others notice increased sexual sensitivity. Tenderness usually eases after three–four months, but some women remain sensitive throughout pregnancy due to hormonal changes.
Breast Development During Pregnancy
Hormones produced by the placenta stimulate milk ducts and mammary glands. Around week 13, the areola becomes larger and darker as the body prepares for milk production.
Colostrum and Leakage
Colostrum, a clear or yellowish fluid, may leak during pregnancy. This can happen during sex or when pressure is applied to the breasts. It’s completely normal and nothing to worry about.
Breastfeeding Premature Babies
Milk ducts fully develop in the second trimester (months 4–6), allowing premature babies to breastfeed. Full milk production usually starts after birth, typically on the second or third day.
Practical Tips
- Choose a supportive bra that doesn’t press on tender breasts.
- Accept that your breasts will feel sore and swollen – it’s normal.
- Colostrum leakage is natural and nothing to worry about.
